A prestigious make, Kœhler-Escoffier was founded in 1912 and produced technically advanced motorbikes, making a name for itself in competition and speed records, notably with a spectacular-looking 1000cc bike. Financial difficulties led to it being bought by Monet-Goyon in 1929 and the subsequent production of simpler machines, sometimes distributed under both brands. This was the case for the Automouche, originally a Monet-Goyon, but also sold from the 1930s as a Kœhler-Escoffier. This elegant motorized tricycle had two seats in tandem (it was also offered with back-to-back seating) and was powered by a 250cc two-stroke Villiers single-cylinder engine with a three-speed gearbox and chain drive to the rear axle.
This example has been restored to a high standard using original parts and has attractive red paintwork with white coachlines. The seats have been retrimmed in brown leatherette with white stitching. This tricycle bears witness to a time when the limited number of cars in use favoured more modest forms of transport, in this case with greater stability than a motorcycle and requiring only a car driving licence.
