During the Second World War, the German army extensively used motorcycles with sidecars, then known as a light and practical means of transport. The BMW R71 was one of them and it did become an inspiration for the design of a Russian motorcycle, the Dnepr M72, through a “technology transfer” whose origin remains controversial. Based in Kyiv, the Dnepr company takes its name from the river that runs through the city and the M72 would continue to be produced after the war as a civilian version, known as the K750.

This particular motorcycle relates to the latter type. The resemblance to the BMW R71 is striking and just like the German machine, this K750 features a 750 flat-twin engine with lateral valves, cardan transmission, a double cradle tubular frame, a telescopic fork and a sliding rear suspension. There is a large air filter underneath the tank, connected to both carburettors. This bike was later fitted with BMW badges but the speedometer from the Russian brand betrays its origin. With its sidecar, it has benefited from a quality restoration and is regarded as a piece that stands out from the crowd, with qualities specific to the German version but with a unique history.
