By unveiling the R80 G/S in 1980, BMW revolutionised the world of off-road motorcycling with a machine suitable for both trails and roads, as evidenced by its name: G for Gelande (off-road) and S for Strasse (road). After a successful career, the R80 G/S evolved in 1987 into the R80 GS (for Gelande Sport), before being reborn in 1996 in the form of the R80 GS Basic, offered for only one year to celebrate the end of the flat-twin engine with two valves per cylinder. It retained technical elements of the R80 GS, including the Paralever engine and transmission, while adopting the old round rocker covers which gave it a “retro” feel. With its specific seat, its R80 ST tank and its blue frame, the bike looked great and recalled the light and graceful shape of the first G/S. Production remained limited, with a total of 3,003 examples made of which only 50 were intended for the French market.

It is consequently logical that this particular one was purchased in Germany, at Zweirad-Center Lubeley in Finnentrop. Equipped with a clock, a rev counter and oil temperature thermometer cap, an engine and transmission rebuild was carried out by its owner and displays interesting details such as BMW-branded valve caps. With a mileage of 69,325 km and in desirable condition, this rare and attractive motorcycle symbolises the end of an engine that made the glory of the make from Munich. 

Please note that part 1 of the Belgian title de circulation has been lost and that administrative procedures to obtain a duplicate are underway. The Belgian title will be returned to the buyer as soon as possible after the sale.
