In the 1930s, like many other American makes, Harley-Davidson chose simplicity over power, which favoured side-valve engines. The company therefore introduced its first ‘flathead’ V-twin engine with a capacity of 45ci (737cc), which was fitted to its R-series models. With its aluminium cylinder heads and lost-oil lubrication, it was strong, durable and flexible, and the 25bhp it produced was sufficient for the company's models destined for use on the open road. It was also well suited for sidecar combinations, a practical set-up appreciated by users who did not want to buy a car.

The R-series models were simply designed, with a girder fork and a rigid frame at the rear (suspension was by means of the saddle springs). They were nonetheless well finished, with wraparound mudguards, a comprehensive set of instruments and coloured coachlines. The three-speed gearbox was controlled by a lever on the left of the fuel tank.

The combination we are offering – a Model R and a sidecar with suspension – was restored in the past and presents very well. The paint is to a high standard, with its characteristic coachlines, and all its accessories are present: the lighting, horn, front tool box, running boards with rubber strips, a Corbin speedometer reading in kph, a Weston ammeter etc. The leatherette seat in the sidecar, which matches the saddle with its red piping, has been retrimmed and can easily accommodate an adult passenger. The engine is most attractive, with its valve tubes on view: with its characteristic noise, it will ensure that this historic combination – which is rare, complete and attractively presented – gives its lucky buyer an enjoyable ride.
