As a rival of the big Zundapps and also known as the replacement for the R11 and R16 in the BMW range of 750 cc twin-cylinder engines, the R12 benefited from truly interesting improvements, such as the first hydraulic telescopic fork offered by the manufacturer. The motorbike also remained faithful to the double-cradle frame made of pressed metal sheets and the flat-twin engine with lateral valves which had largely proven itself; the latter was connected by a cardan shaft to a four-speed gearbox, controlled by a lever on the right side of the tank. With a 5.2 to 1 compression ratio, a power of 18 hp and a maximum speed of 3,400 rpm in its single-carburettor version, this motorbike was destined for endurance and reliability rather than speed. It also explains why the German army was seduced by it, as they became its exclusive users from 1938, until the model was discontinued in 1942 when it gave way to the more modern R75. The R12 was coupled to a solidly built sidecar, with interchangeable wheels with the ones from the bike, a headlight on the mudguard and a spare wheel.

This particular BMW R12 is a military version with a sidecar. It bears the matte grey paint colour and has the single Sum carburettor (specific to this version); adding to the latter is a special feature: a Veigel speedometer which has a red zone from 85 km/h, probably to dampen the eagerness of overly enthusiastic users. It has the “Drilastic” branding on the rear seat and the forward adjustment control seems to have been replaced by an original Russian part, as evidenced by its Cyrillic inscription. This historic and rare example is complete and it is offered in an old restoration presentation, with no excess. As a milestone in the history of the brand and in its authentic condition, this BMW R12 will seduce all types of enthusiasts.
