“Lightning”, a name that reflected the sportier character compared to its sister the Thunderbolt, from which this BSA took the 650 cc twin-cylinder engine but with two Amal carburettors instead of just one. It reached a top speed of 175 km/h thanks to its 50 hp, which enabled it to hold its own among its English competitors. The chassis was at the same level with a double cradle frame and a double cam front brake; and even if it suffered from vibrations at high revs, this versatile motorcycle was able to seduce the American market, a valuable outlet for British manufacturers.
This particular BSA Lightning was first registered on the 14th October 1969 in Milan. It remained there until the 10th June 1986 when it was sold to Enzo Dalbeni in Mantua and then in 1990 to Alberto Gaviolo in Modena. In 1992, it was purchased by Rosanna Donato of Carpi, before being acquired by Umberto Panini in 1992. This bike is in a lovely original condition, with its cracked grips bearing witness of the passing years. It is an interesting English classic example, iconic in that era when these motorbikes were still highly ranked and with an exhilarating sound.
