Whilst Ducati’s racing achievements remained limited in the mid-1970s, British champion Mike Hailwood took a magnificent victory at the Isle of Man TT in 1978, riding a Ducati NCR. The manufacturer decided to capitalise on this success by offering a Ducati Mike Hailwood Replica a year later, directly derived from the 900 SS, from which it took the engine and chassis. It was the first production Ducati with a full fairing, which had the shape as well as the red, green and white colours of the 1978 Ducati NCR, but with a colour cut-out that was more reminiscent of the one ridden by Mike Hailwood the following year. During its existence, the model has had various evolutions, including a two-part fairing facilitating disassembly and the addition of lateral covers concealing the battery and rear carburettor. But it was not until 1983 that the MHR received an electric starter based on the more toned-down 900 S2.
Purchased in 2017 by its first owner in Montceau-les-Mines, this MHR is a 1982 model from the 900 SS, equipped with Conti exhausts and with no starter. The paint is original (not restored) and some parts have been redone or replaced, such as front indicator caps, rear indicators, the seat backrest, the kick rubber… Apart from a non-perfect fixing of the fairing on the right side, this bike does not suffer from any particular defect and offers a beautiful quality of presentation, also thanks to its mileage of less than 20,500 km displayed on the odometer.
A magnificent evolution of one of the most glorious episodes of Ducati’s history of the 1970s, this 900 SS MHR combines aesthetic beauty, exhilarating performance and the rarity of a particularly exclusive model.
