The Triumph Speed Twin revolutionized the world of British motorbikes. Developed by Edward Turner, known for the Ariel Square Four and who later made a foray into car engines with the V8 fitted to the Daimler SP250, the Triumph had an innovative vertical twin in a market dominated by single-cylinder engines, a design which would be widely imitated by the leading manufacturers. Introduced in 1937, its 500cc engine had overhead valves operated by two camshafts at the base of the cylinders and it was a remarkable all-rounder, making it easy to use. After the interruption caused by the war, the Speed Twin continued its career until the 1960s, enjoying various improvements including sprung hub rear suspension to replace the original rigid frame and the arrival of instruments built into the headlamp nacelle.
The Speed Twin we are offering for sale was bought by our client from its first owner in England. In original condition, it was stripped down to make it easier to bring it back to France, before being restored by a group of friends. The result is very pleasing, and with its iridescent blue paint, this bike does justice to the model which opened up the golden age of British ‘twins’ in the 1940s and ‘50s, bikes with a strong personality and a manly sound.
