It was in 1909 that Henry M. Crane, an engineer renowned for his mechanical achievements (particularly for racing boats), founded the Crane Motor Company. His creations were intended for the wealthiest individuals (Roosevelt, Rockefeller, Vanderbilt, etc.): The Model 3 was known as the most expensive model in the United States.
It was fitted with an amazing 6-cylinder inline engine designed by Henry Crane. At the end of 1914, the brand was acquired by Simplex in order to benefit from Crane’s technical innovations; the Simplex-Crane Model 5 was launched in 1915, powered by an improved version of the 9.25-litre Crane 6-cylinder engine developing 110 hp! With its 4-speed gearbox, hydraulic shock absorbers, dual ignition, lighting and electric start as well as many other refinements, the Model 5 was produced in only 472 examples and could be sold as a chassis to be entrusted to a coachbuilder of the owner’s choice.
This particular example was found in England by collector Steve Hopins, a member of the famous VSCC. It was in England that the car had a full and high-quality restoration, before joining a major Dutch collection in 2011. Then in 2023, the current owner’s father acquired it, impressed by the car’s appearance with its sporty double-phaeton bodywork and its extraordinary engine. Since then, the engine was rebuilt, with the pistons replaced, a damaged cylinder welded and sleeved, valves running-in, replacement of the cylinder block gaskets and restoration of the water pump.
The front axle, steering, gearbox and differential were also inspected and restored where necessary. All 5 tyres were also changed. We were able to appreciate the smooth functioning of the entire car and the ease of starting this fascinating engine. We were told that during a road test, the car reached over 120 km/h with a bit of room for more!
Its rarity and elegance earned it the “Best of Show” award at the 2023 Concours of Elegance at the Circuit des Remparts in Angoulême. Ready to hit the road, this quality automobile deserves a place in a beautiful collection; it will spark admiration and intrigue, whether on the road or in the most selective concours of elegance events.
