Announced in 2013 following the presentation of a superb concept car in 2010, the 918 is a flagship model for the Stuttgart-based brand. It follows on from the Carrera GT, which had already been elevated to mythical status by fans of the brand. It also occupies an important place in the famous trio of hypercars of the 2010s.
Faced with the challenge of creating a hybrid hypercar, Ferrari, McLaren and Porsche took very different approaches to the task at hand. Porsche took a risky gamble by offering the lightest and least powerful car on the market, while at the same time adopting high-level technologies, including a formidable all-wheel drive system. Often overlooked, the combustion engine is a revised version of the V8 used in the RS Spyder prototype at Le Mans. Atmospheric, oversquare, with a flat crankshaft and a top speed of 9,150 rpm, its 4,593 cc engine produces 608 bhp, giving it a specific power output of around 132 bhp per litre. This is coupled to two electric motors with a combined output of 281 bhp, giving a total output of over 880 bhp! The performance is still breathtaking, with a 0-100 km/h time of 2.6 seconds, a 0-200 km/h time of 7.2 seconds and a top speed of 345 km/h. With a time of 6:57 minutes at the Nurburgring, it still ranks 14th in the road car category despite being 11 years old! There had been much debate about the performance of the three hypercars, which were difficult to separate at the time, but the ease and versatility of the 918 was unanimously appreciated.
Only 918 examples of the 918 Spyder were built, all sold to loyal customers of the brand.
The car we are presenting is production number 582. It was delivered new to the UK from the Porsche centre in Reading, Berkshire. It was acquired by its current owner in 2018. A demanding collector, he specifically wanted to find a black metallic model with a low mileage. In 2020, having covered 7,272 km, the car had its engine replaced by the factory. The engine now has just under 1,300 km on the clock, and is a more reliable version than the original design. The car's total mileage is now 8,582 km.
The 918 Spyder, already a legend and still a top performer, is also the most reliable and usable hypercar of its generation. Adored by connoisseurs, it is certain to find a place in the world's most prestigious collections in years to come.
