The Rothmans Trophy was created by Tullio Abbate, who invited Gilles Villeneuve, Didier Pironi, Riccardo Patrese, Bruno Giacomelli, Beppi Gabbiani, Jean-Pierre Jarier, Marc Surer and Eddie Cheever to take part in a motorboat race on Lake Como prior to the 1981 Italian GP. The Tullio Abbate team provided boats for each driver and the Grand Hotel Villa D'este provided the base for the event. Cigarette manufacturer Rothmans was the sponsor and gave its name to this memorable cup: the Trofeo Rothmans. Tullio Abbate on the race: "It was a wonderful opportunity. You could feel the authentic atmosphere of a Grand Prix in the air. Gilles raced with the same enthusiasm and dedication that he brought to the track in Formula 1. He won the race, and this generated a fantastic atmosphere. There were thousands of spectators around the circuit, both on shore and on boats, and I'm sure people are still talking about that Rothmans Trophy race today!"
The vessel for sale is one of just seven boats of this type built by the famous boatbuilder to be used in this race. It is number 5, driven by French F1 champion Didier Pironi. It is in well-preserved original condition, with its Rothmans livery and 165 hp Mercruiser 485 engine. The boat will require a complete overhaul before being launched and taking to the water. It should also be pointed out that this is not really a racing boat made for competition, as this race was more of a marketing stunt on the part of Abbate and Rothmans. It would, however, be perfect for leisurely family outings or simply to travel by sea to Ramatuelle's most beautiful private beaches. Imagine anchoring your boat with its striking, sporty look opposite Tahiti Beach or Moorea...
