Né en 1963 en Belgique, Johan Creten est un sculpteur flamand installé à Paris. Il travaille tout autour du monde, de La Haye à New York et de Miami à Mexico. Véritable précurseur dans le renouveau de la céramique dans l'art contemporain aux côtés de Thomas Schütte et Lucio Fontana, il réalise depuis peu des bronzes à échelle monumentale, dont quelques exemples majeurs ont été révélés lors de son exposition personnelle "God is a Stranger" à la galerie Perrotin de New York en 2015. Il a notamment exposé dans les salles Renaissance du Louvre, en dialogue avec Bernard Palissy, au musée national Eugène Delacroix à Paris, au Bass Museum of Art de Miami, au Middelheimmuseum à Anvers, ou encore au Bonnefantenmuseum à Maastricht. Ce bijou est tiré de la sculpture monumentale en bronze patiné du même nom: Octo. Créature hybride et énigmatique, "Octo" est une représentation de la rencontre et de l'ambivalence des mondes animal, humain et naturel. Reprenant la forme d'une raie, on peut voir en "Octo" une référence au "Jenny Haniver" (raie séchée découpée). Datant du 16ème siècel, ce monstre marin inventé par les pêcheurs anversois d'autrefois était destiné à cultiver les mystères des abysses. On le retrouve principalement dans les cabinets de curiosité. A l'échelle du bijou, c'est la dimension magique de l'objet et de la figure de l'"Octo" qui est mise en jeu.
