This car has had a remarkable history, as Paul-Émile B recounts: “This Packard belonged to a man from Uruguay who had inherited a large amount of money and, believing that the end of the world was nigh, decided to invest it all in classic cars. He went to the United States to buy them, but he had managed his inheritance badly and was unable to pay the customs duties, so all the cars were seized and sold. I bought three of them, but in the end I only kept the one I really liked, the Packard.” It had been restored and is today in excellent condition.
Nicknamed the ‘pregnant elephant’ on account of its size and rounded styling, this is one of the most luxurious versions, with additional chrome trim on the body, an ivory steering wheel and spotlights on either side of the windscreen. It had up-to-the-minute equipment including hydraulic operation for the windows and hood, and a manual gearbox with a power-assisted clutch. Under the bonnet was a 5.3-litre straight-eight developing 150bhp, which made it very pleasant to drive, as its owner confirms: “I love taking this car for a drive, it’s ideal for trips to the sea when the weather is good. We also used it a lot with the family and for weddings.” All of them things its new owner will surely continue to enjoy.
