In 2005, a range of three "Sport Classic" models was launched by Ducati under the direction of Pierre Terblanche, seeking to embody the style of the most memorable machines of the 70s. The first to emerge, the Paul Smart 1000, was a tribute to the 750 Super Sport, which had been developed from the bike on which the popular British champion had won the 1972 Imola 200. This limited edition series of 2,000 bikes (150 designated for the French market) featured an air-cooled 1000 DS twin-cylinder engine, a tubular frame in the same aqua green as the Super Sports of the time, spoked wheels, an elegant curved fairing with a round headlight, a contoured seat backrest, and a meticulous finish. However, the bike didn't compromise when it came to technology, with modern features such as dual ignition, Öhlins shock absorber and fork, double swingarm, floating Brembo discs at the front, an oil cooler, and a two-in-one exhaust. Rizoma's transparent belt guards added to the originality of the presentation.
The machine on offer was purchased in October 2013 in Lyon. It has 35,800 km on the clock. Immaculately presented, it's a fine tribute to a hugely popular rider and a legendary motorbike, combining the elegant style of the 1970s with the fun of 2000s technology.
