The subject of this work is the Rainbow Serpent, the creation story that is told in many forms across the entire Australian continent. Dreamtime stories tell of flying Rainbow snakes that are associated with monsoon rain and the return of an abundance of wild bush food including meat and vegetable sources. The provenance of this work unknown but it is possible that the work was collected by missionaries at one of the coastal settlements along the North West Australian coast. The double outlined drawing, both red and black ochre is unusual.
