Caravan in the desert, oil on panel, signed, by T. Frère
12.99 x 22.44 in.
Collection particulière, France
A student of Jules Coignet and Camille Roqueplan, Théodore Frère travelled to Algeria in 1836. From then on, he painted nothing but scenes of the Muslim world. This tireless traveller endeavoured to capture all the poetry of the landscapes of North Africa, and that of the Near and Middle East. In 1851, he spent eighteen months in Constantinople, which inspired several pictures that were shown at the Paris Salon and at the Universal Exhibitions. Enveloped in a cloud of dust, the caravan does not seem to be paying any attention to the remains lying on the ground, which are a clear warning of the danger of the desert.
