In 2023, Artcurial generated great enthusiasm by spotlighting artists from the Hanoi School. In June, four exceptional works by Le Pho and Mai Trung Thu during the Impressionist & Modern Art sale exceeded all expectations, totalling nearly €1.4 million, tripling the initial estimate. In December, two other works were auctioned for over €770,000, doubling their initial estimate.

Descendants of the École des Beaux-Arts in Hanoi, founded in 1924 under the direction of Victor Tardieu, Le Pho, Mai Trung Thu, and Vu Cao Dam hold a special place in the panorama of Vietnamese artists. Their works combine analysis of Western masters with the refinement of traditional Asian techniques. The School nurtures a generation of brilliant artists who benefit from this happy synthesis to create a new art, a harmonious balance, or even fusion, between two cultures.
